In 1948 Arthur John Webb opened a small retail
outlet near the centre of Rotherham. As part of his daily working routine
he would visit the Castlefolds Market in Sheffield to stock the shop with
the freshest produce available. This, coupled with value for money, justifiably
gave him a reputation as a leading retail figure in the area.
As the post war year's influence subsided on the local economy, the business
gained strength from year to year and with the introduction of his son,
Tony, a large delivery sector emerged supplying schools, homes and canteens
within the thriving steel and coal industries.
In 1973 Tony moved to the Parkway Market in Sheffield to open a wholesale
business, whilst still maintaining the retail outlet in Rotherham. The success
of this through the next 25 years was based on the same principles that
had been so important so many years before. The retail outlet was sold in
1976 thus giving time to make A.J.Webb & Son (Sheffield) the leading
wholesaler of fresh produce in the area.
The next 25 years would see many changes. Emphasis on delivery, a vastly
diversified product range and an ever increasing demand for quality and
freshness to name but a few. A.J.Webb & Son (Sheffield) maintained its
success by adapting to these as and when they came. However its greatest
challenge would be relocating to a new purpose built property on the announcement
that the Parkway Market would be closed in 2001. |
